“[My favorite part of volunteering was] meeting new people and working with the children. It was interesting to see different types of after-school care in another country.”
Caroline Karoczkai
"This program allowed me to take Spanish courses and volunteer at the same time. I was able to accomplish a lot in a short period of time. [My favorite part of the experience was] feeling like [I] really connected and made a difference in the community."
Our Language and Culture in Chile program is designed for students interested in language, culture, anthropology, or geography. The program provides participants with the opportunity to explore Chile’s unique culture and history in the context of its vibrant capital city. Students will attend thematic Spanish classes which allow them to discover the nation’s history, cuisine, art, and music, as well as participate in cultural excursions and lessons.
The volunteer service portion of the program allows students to work with local nonprofit organizations, providing them with a deeper insight into all aspects of Chilean society. Students volunteering in Santiago can work at a children's shelter and orphanage, helping both the children in need and the hardworking staff at the center. Participants will be involved in the daily tasks of caring for babies and toddlers—including feeding, bathing and playing with them, giving them the one-on-one attention they need and deserve.
Program Highlights:
Attend seminars on the Argentine Economy, MERCOSUR, and Argentine Society with top university professors.
Volunteer with our local Infant Care project serving Chile’s underprivileged citizens and gain insight into all levels of Chilean society.
Participate in specialized cultural lessons in Chilean cooking and art.
Improve your Spanish language skills while living with a host family.
Explore the city in specialized excursions with trips to such sites as Concha y Toro Vineyard, the Mercado Central, and La Chascona, home of Chile’s Nobel Prize-winning author Pablo Neruda.
This program can be created for one to four week itineraries.
Why Service Learn in Santiago?
Chile’s unique blend of history, culture, and economic development make it a fascinating case study in both traditional culture and modern society. Due in part to the country’s relative geographical isolation—it’s bounded by the Andes on one side and the Pacific on the other—plus a historic indigenous resistance, Chile was the last nation in the Americas to be colonized by the Spanish. The national capital, Santiago, is nestled in a valley at the foot of the picturesque Andes and boasts almost 6 million residents, a mild, Mediterranean climate, and a variety of museums, monuments, and markets. This backdrop of unique culture, history, and geography creates an exciting and informative location for service learning participants to learn more about both the historical and modern society of Chile.
Volunteer work with our local partner organizations provides students with the opportunity to discover another aspect of Santiago: its underprivileged residents and the community organizations working to assist them. In this portion of the program, service learning participants will not only help make a difference in the lives of Chileans, but will also get an unparalleled opportunity to learn more about the nation’s history, culture, and society by interacting with its citizens in a unique and meaningful way.
Three Good Reasons to Study in Santiago :
Santiago is the nation's capital and home to one-third of the country's population, giving it a rich culture and bustling atmosphere.
Chile has produced some of Latin America’s greatest writers including Pablo Neruda and Isabel Allende.
In less than two hours in either direction from the centrally located city, you can be strolling on the coast of the Pacific Ocean or skiing in the snowcapped Andes.
