What Volunteers Can Do: |
| |
Volunteers in this program will teach English to a class of school-aged children or adults for one or two semesters. You will serve an important role as a native speaker in encouraging and motivating reserved students in practicing their oral English skills. Participants are responsible for planning their classes with the help of a bilingual supervisor according to your students' needs. In addition, volunteers help with homework, organize games, and assist with administrative work. As a longer term volunteer, you will also have the opportunity to become involved in school life and activities outside of the classroom. Program participants will serve as ambassadors to their students while learning about and participating in Chinese culture. |

Why Volunteer in China? |
| |
As the second largest country and one of the oldest civilizations in the world, China has a wealth of natural wonders, historic sites, and cultural opportunities for intrepid travelers. China offers a wide diversity of landscapes, from the harsh, dry deserts of the north to the lush subtropical forests of the south, and from the rugged Himalayas in the west, to 9000 miles (14,500 km) of stunning coastline on the eastern seaboard.
As a result of a booming economy and rapidly increasing globalization, China has more English-language learners than the U.S. With English language skills playing such an important role in the success of individuals and the country as a whole, the Chinese government is actively supporting native English speakers teaching in schools and language centers across China. Our partner organizations work in conjunction with the government to provide schools in desperate need with high-quality English teachers. Your efforts as a volunteer will have an important impact on your students and their future opportunities. |

China Teach English Internship Goals |
| |
The goal of the China Teach English Internship is to provide Chinese school children and adults with high-quality English education from a native speaker. The program matches responsible and caring volunteers with classes of eager students. Your presence and skills as a native speaker will make a big impact in encouraging students who lack confidence in their oral English. Through involvement both in and outside of the classroom, volunteers are able to expose students to their culture and language, while also learning more about the Chinese. This cultural exchange is an important component in fostering mutual respect and understanding between countries in an increasingly global world. |
