Guatemala is a paradise for all who visit, from nature-lovers to archeology buffs. The rugged terrain and lush forests of the Central American country have inspired visitors from around the world. Known as the land of eternal spring, Guatemala offers ideal temperatures year-round. Its fantastic geography is accented with the unique traditions of the ancient Mayan civilization, which have strongly influenced the culture of the country to the present day.
Program Location: El Petén
The Petén region in the northern part of the country comprises of nearly one third of Guatemala’s territory. Once heavily populated by the indigenous Mayan people, the now sparsely populated area is famous for its archeological remains, namely the impressive ruins at Tikal. The Petén rainforest is home to hundreds of species of mammals, birds, and plants.
Why Volunteer in Guatemala?
The largest country in Central America, Guatemala boasts a rich cultural heritage and exceptional biodiversity with a total of eight distinct ecosystems. A highlight is the Petén region, home to the last stretch of virgin rainforest in Central America. Unfortunately, the land is not all federally protected and is under constant threat of destruction from pollution, logging, farming, and general environmental disregard.
Also at risk are the area’s wild animals, some of whom are endangered due to rainforest destruction and others who are victims of illegal wildlife smuggling. The Petén is in dire need of protection for both ecological and historical reasons. As a volunteer or service learning participant in Guatemala, your help will enable the restoration of wild animals to their natural habitat, as well as increase awareness of rainforest wildlife in the important Petén region.
