  Health, Safety & Security

At BridgeVolunteers, the safety of our volunteers is our highest priority. Therefore, we have worked to develop policies and procedures that will help you reduce your risk and enhance your safety and security while abroad.

Pre-Departure Information
BridgeVolunteers provides all volunteers with extensive pre-departure materials which outline health preparation and issues, security alerts, and logistical information to ensure that volunteers have a safe experience overseas. Adequate preparation is the first important step to guaranteeing health and safety while abroad.

Orientation Overseas
As part of your program orientation abroad, BridgeVolunteers will provide you with information on personal safety, cultural sensitivity, and the local environment that will help ensure that your experience is safe, enjoyable, and productive.

In-Country Support
BridgeVolunteers staff members are prepared to provide whatever support is necessary during your time with us. You can expect help from program coordinators, field guides, fellow volunteers and the staff of both BridgeVolunteers and our local partner organizations. We also provide multiple 24-hour cell phone numbers of our in-country program directors for emergencies.

Emergency Travel Insurance
BridgeVolunteers provides basic medical and emergency travel insurance to cover emergency evacuation, lost or stolen passport, delayed baggage, and minor medical costs. The policy is not intended to replace your current health insurance, which we suggest volunteers maintain for the duration of their program abroad. For more information please see our Travel Insurance page.

Your Part
All of the above information and procedures are intended to give program participants what they need to maintain their safety and security abroad; ultimately, however, each person is responsible for using these tools effectively. Your security is best enhanced by mature conduct, a good understanding of your local environment, personal safety skills, and respect for local customs, which may be much different than at home. By working with our on-site staff and utilizing the information and procedures provided by us, participants can ensure that they have a positive, safe, and healthy experience overseas.
