Medical Care:

HIV Outreach:
Volunteers in the HIV Outreach program will help with the treatment and prevention of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Honduras. Volunteer activities include educating the local community about prevention, designing and distributing complementary educational materials, working in the diagnosis and treatment of minor opportunistic infections and palliative care, referring patients to public or private sources of more sophisticated care, and helping to reduce the stigma of being HIV-positive by combating discrimination. |

Why Volunteer in Honduras? |
|
|
| |
Located in Central America between the Caribbean Sea the Pacific Ocean, Honduras offers beautiful beaches, dense rainforests, and impressive Mayan ruins for the adventurous traveller. However, Honduras is not without its problems, and its public health care system is one of the worst in Latin America. There are very few adequate hospitals, and most middle class families are unable to afford them.
To make matters worse, Honduras has recently experienced a rapid increase in HIV infections, accounting for nearly 60 percent of all cases reported in Central America. Roughly 80 percent of all reported cases are attributable to heterosexual transmission, and studies indicate that between 1 and 4 percent of pregnant women have been infected with the virus. |
