What Volunteers Can Do: |
| |
Volunteers with this innovative program will work in rural elementary schools throughout India to help implement physical education programs and get students involved in new sports activities. Although sports in India are tremendously popular, they are often a low priority in schools and are not adequately supported by the government. Consequently, many Indian children lack regular exercise to stimulate motor skills, maintain personal health, and foster a sense of teamwork.
The Sports Coaching Program encourages and supports athletic activities in Indian elementary schools. As a volunteer with this program, you will lead physical education activities in local primary schools and organize sports clubs for after-school activities. You will also work to improve athletic facilities in the region.
As an added bonus, volunteers will begin the program with a week-long adventure expedition in the Himalayas or in the spectacular desert landscapes of Rajasthan. You will enjoy the best of Indian scenery and nature while improving the lives of local children. |

Why Volunteer in India? |
| |
Although modernizing quickly, India is not without its share of problems. Its growing population has already topped the 1-billion mark and the country has one of the highest poverty rates in the world. Because of both national debt and the strict class division of the caste system, most of India's poor receive little or no education, health care, or social services.
Volunteers will live and work in Rajasthan or Himachal, two northern states in India. Rajasthan is a land rich in both cultural and geographical diversity; a mix of deserts, forests and mountain ranges. Himachal is situated amid snow-capped mountains and lush green valleys.
While India is quickly developing into one of the world's economic powerhouses, the prosperity has been slow to trickle down to local communities. Many provincial Indian schools have no physical education program whatsoever. They are still struggling to provide students with even a basic academic education. |

India Sports Coaching Program Goals: |
| |
The goal of the India Sports Coaching Program is to bring sports and physical education to the disadvantaged children of rural India. Volunteers in this program use games and activities to help children develop motor skills, maintain personal health, and foster a sense of teamwork. You will work with local children and organize sports activities for designated recess times and after-school programs. In doing so, you ensure that Indian children have the opportunity "to engage in play and recreational activities appropriate to the age of the child", a fundamental right as described by the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
Through your hands-on work with the Sports Coaching Program, you will gain a deeper understanding of India's challenges while you improve the lives of many Indian children. |
