What Volunteers Can Do: |
|
|
| |
As a volunteer with our Teach English Program, you will work with local teachers and students in small-town schools in the rural states of Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan. You will help to create a positive learning environment for the children, which will encourage them to continue their education throughout their lives. Volunteers will teach English and math and help to organize arts and crafts activities and games. Depending on the needs of the school, you might act as an assistant teacher or lead a class of students independently.
In addition to educating and entertaining the children, you will give each child individual attention, care, and mentorship. Volunteers will also help to promote hygiene and health awareness among India's young people. As a volunteer with our Teach English Program, you will have the opportunity to dramatically improve the levels of education, health, and social welfare among the youth of rural India. |

Why Volunteer in India? |
|
|
| |
Although modernizing quickly, India is not without its share of problems. Its growing population has already topped the 1-billion mark and the country has one of the highest poverty rates in the world. Because of both national debt and the strict class division of the caste system, most of India's poor receive little or no education, health care, or social services.
Program Location: Rajasthan
This state in northwestern India is known for its cultural and geographical diversity. Stretching from the cool climate of the towering Himalayas to the dry ecosystem of the Thar Desert, Rajasthan is home to a wide variety of plants and animals, including the Indian tiger.
Program Location: Himachal Pradesh
Distinguished by the magnificent Himalayan Mountains on the Tibetan border, the natural beauty of this state is unsurpassed. Its rocky, rugged terrain boasts numerous lakes and cool, green valleys, and is also home to many revered religious temples and shrines. Himachal is one of India's most populated rural states, and most of its residents live in small villages subsisting on agriculture. Culturally, this area is characterized by a lively and diverse mix of people, customs, and traditions. |

India Teach English Program Goals: |
|
|
| |
Due to the lack of social welfare in India, local residents have collaborated to promote health and education on a state-by-state basis. Our partner organization was founded in 2000, and has been working to better the lives of the residents of India's rural communities ever since. As a volunteer in Rajasthan or Himachal, you will make an important contribution to these communities by promoting health and education. Your hard work and enthusiasm will support and inspire the youth of India for generations to come. |

Airport Pickup and Orientation: |
|
|
| |
Upon arrival, you will be picked up at the airport in New Delhi and taken to a hotel to spend your first night. Next, you will be taken to the city of Jaipur in the state of Rajasthan, where you will meet your volunteer group and your host family for the duration of the orientation program.
During this time, you will participate in a 3-day volunteer orientation designed to ensure a smooth transition into Indian life and a productive contribution to the local community. The orientation will provide you with extensive information about your new work situation, as well as tips on handling intercultural issues. After this orientation period, you will take a bus to Rajasthan or Himachal, the site of your volunteer program. |

Upon arrival, volunteers will spend one night in a hotel. During the following 3-day orientation, volunteers stay with English-speaking host families in Jaipur, Rajasthan.
In both Rajasthan and Himachal, volunteers will stay in a rural camp. The camps provide an authentic cultural experience while also providing comfort and safety. They are ideally situated and designed to allow volunteers to experience the culture of each area, while offering both privacy and opportunities for recreational activities. All camp structures have been made with locally available material, which is another way this program has supported the local communities.
The rural camps are large campuses that have a cafeteria, kitchen, and training area, as well as ample space for outdoor activities and workshops. Volunteers will stay in one of the 24 rooms, either a double or triple occupancy, with a private bathroom and running hot water in the winter. For free time at the rural camp, there is an entertainment room with games, books, television, and movies. |
