"This program allowed me to take Spanish courses and volunteer at the same time. I was able to accomplish a lot in a short period of time. [My favorite part of the experience was] feeling like [I] really connected and made a difference in the community."

  Community Outreach &
Cultural Preservation Program

Salta, Argentina

Program Overview

Our Community Outreach and Cultural Preservation Program in Salta is designed for students interested in culture, development, language, or anthropology. The program provides participants with the opportunity to explore a less-traveled region of Argentina and meet face-to-face with local residents who are working to better their communities. Students will have the opportunity to explore the complex issues facing locals as they strive to preserve their communities against negative economic and social forces.

Participants in the program will volunteer at a local outreach center serving food and playing with children, or work to preserve Salta's beautiful natural surroundings. This volunteer service is intended to provide students with a deeper insight into the diverse aspects of Argentine society as well as give them a greater appreciation of the stunning geography of the region.

Why Service Learn in Salta?
Located in one of Argentina’s most scenic regions, Salta is known as “La Linda” (the beautiful) for its picturesque plazas, colonial Spanish architecture, and spectacular natural surroundings. Salta is also home to the largest indigenous population in Argentina. In fact, the area bears more resemblance to areas of Peru and Bolivia than it does to the cosmopolitan city of Buenos Aires, which makes it ideal for exploring indigenous culture.

Unfortunately, Salta also suffers from extreme poverty, unhealthy living conditions, and a bleak future for its children. In order to address these issues, our partner organizations in Salta have launched a variety of outreach programs to help residents in need. They work to feed community members (especially children), organize craft and vocational workshops, teach English to local residents, and provide recreational activities for youth. Service learning participants in Salta have the opportunity to help our partner organizations in these efforts, while interacting with a culturally rich and underrepresented population in Argentina.

Salta's proximity to national parks and pre-Colombian ruins makes it an ideal location to explore the unique history of northern Argentina.
