“[My favorite part of volunteering was] meeting new people and working with the children. It was interesting to see different types of after-school care in another country.”

  Language & Culture Program
Buenos Aires, Argentina

Program Overview

Our Language and Culture in Argentina Program is designed for students interested in language, culture, anthropology, or geography. The program provides participants with the opportunity to explore Argentina’s unique culture and history in the context of its vibrant capital city. Students attend thematic Spanish classes which allow them to discover Argentina’s history, cuisine, art, and music, as well as participate in cultural excursions and lessons.

The volunteer service portion of the program allows students to work with local nonprofit organizations, providing them with a deeper insight into all aspects of Argentine society. Participants in these projects will have the opportunity to teach city residents about nutrition, personal hygiene, and healthy lifestyles; work with disabled people; provide informal English lessons; and/or cook and serve afternoon snacks or evening meals.

Attend intensive Spanish classes which emphasize conversational language skills and can also incorporate subjects such as history, tango, art, and cuisine.

Explore the city in specialized excursions with trips to such places as chic Recoleta, hip Palermo, and historic San Telmo, the birthplace of tango.

Volunteer with our local Community Outreach, Teach English, and Youth Outreach projects and serve Argentina’s underprivileged citizens while gaining insight into all levels of Argentine society.

Participate in specialized cultural lessons in tango and Argentine cooking.

Improve Spanish language skills while living with a local host family.

This program can be created for one to four week itineraries.

Why Service Learn in Buenos Aires?
Argentina is known for its culture and class, seamlessly combining an authentic Latin American experience with a strong European heritage. The capital Buenos Aires is called the “Paris of South America,” and offers elegant architecture, exquisite cuisine, a legendary nightlife, and fashionable shopping. Countless museums, fascinating monuments, and an array of rich and diverse neighborhoods offer service learning participants ample opportunity to experience the city’s unique culture on a much deeper level.

Although a culturally rich and historically prosperous nation, Argentina has faced severe economic struggles in the last decade. These difficult financial times have led to a large disparity between rich and poor and to a host of newfound social problems. Even Argentines who were once part of a solid middle class now live in poverty, with limited access to education, heath care, and profitable employment. Working with our local partner organizations, service learning participants can help promote youth and adult education, train adults in job skills, and help out in local community centers—all while getting the unparalleled opportunity to learn more about the nation’s history, culture, and society by interacting with its citizens in a unique and meaningful way.

The cosmopolitan capital of the largest Spanish-speaking country in South America, Buenos Aires boasts world-famous museums, monuments, restaurants, and other cultural highlights.
