“[My favorite part of volunteering was] meeting new people and working with the children. It was interesting to see different types of after-school care in another country.”

  Politics & Human Rights Program
Buenos Aires, Argentina

Program Overview

Our Politics and Human Rights Program in Argentina is intended for students with an interest in political science, social justice, and public policy who are looking to deepen their understanding of modern Argentine politics and history. In addition to rigorous academic classes, our students will also participate in service learning projects in order to better understand all aspects of Argentine society.

The volunteer service portion of the program allows students to work with local nonprofit organizations, offering participants deeper insight into all aspects of Argentine society. Students working on these projects will have the opportunity to teach city residents about nutrition, personal hygiene, and healthy lifestyles; work with disabled people; provide informal English lessons; and cook and serve afternoon snacks or evening meals.

Why Service Learn in Buenos Aires?
Argentina has a colorful past—full of both peaks of positive growth and cultural expansion, and darker periods of conflict and struggle. As in much of South America, the nation’s history is rife with political ups and downs, including a brutal military dictatorship, which left 30,000 citizens “disappeared.” Despite the passage of nearly two decades since the end of the “Dirty War,” this dark past still weighs heavily on the Argentine consciousness. As Argentina enters a new century, local leaders are working to atone for crimes committed in the nation’s past, and to create equality in economic and social sectors. A fascinating study in politics, human rights, and reconciliation, Buenos Aires gives service learning participants the chance to understand these complicated issues up-close and personal.

Buenos Aires is home to many organizations working for recognition of human rights violations, promoting social justice, and aiming to reduce the effects of poverty on city residents. While working on community outreach and education projects with our local partner organizations, service learning program participants not only will help make a difference in the lives of underprivileged Argentines, but will also get an unparalleled opportunity to interact with local residents and community organizations, providing students with a deeper insight into the society, politics, culture, and history of this rich nation.

The cosmopolitan capital of the largest Spanish-speaking country in South America, Buenos Aires boasts world-famous museums, monuments, restaurants, and other cultural highlights.
