Education & Social Justice Program Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Program Overview
Our Education and Social Justice Program in Brazil is intended for students interested in education, social justice, public policy, and advocacy who are looking to gain extensive insight into the educational and social realities of this complex nation. In addition to rigorous academic classes, our students will also participate in service learning projects in order to better understand social and economic inequalities in Brazil.
The volunteer service portion of the program gives students the unique opportunity to be a mentor and role model to the
youth of the favelas (shantytowns) of Rio, encouraging them to seek higher education and productive employment. Volunteers will also be able to lead youth in sports and other recreational activities, organize and teach English classes, tutor kids in English and math, and take care of young children in the nursery.
Program Highlights:
Attend seminars on Brazilian history, education and the works of Paolo Freire, and urban education in favelas.
Teach English to some of Brazil’s underprivileged citizens with our local Teach English project and gain insight into all levels of Brazilian society and educational practices.
Explore the city inspecialized excursions with trips to such sites as the Botanical Gardens, and Pão de Açucar.
Visit local social organizations and schools to better understand the complexities of their work and make key contacts.
Improve your Portuguese language skills through intensive Portuguese classes and living with a host family.
This program can be created for one to four week itineraries.
Why Service Learn in Rio de Janeiro?
There’s no better place than Brazil to learn about the realities of education and social justice in Latin America. The nation is home to leading education scholar and writer, Paolo Friere, and Rio de Janeiro boasts innovative social organizations blazing new roads in urban education and social justice with their work in the city’s favelas (shantytowns). Rio de Janeiro is also a bustling modern metropolis, and as the former national capital, still holds onto the aura of that glorious era with a wide variety of restaurants, tourist attractions, historic sites, and nightlife options.
However, alongside some of the richest, most beautiful, and most luxurious neighborhoods in the world, live thousands of citizens in dire poverty in shantytowns, called favelas, around the city. Often unable to attend city schools and largely unaided by the government, favela residents find themselves in a negative cycle that is difficult to escape without outside help. With a program at a Rio community center, our local partner organization is working hard to promote literacy and education among the youth of the favelas. Service learning participants in Rio de Janeiro will help teach and mentor the youth of these favelas, and have the opportunity to see urban education, social justice, and community organization in action.
Three Good Reasons to Study in Rio de Janeiro:
Brazil is the home to Paolo Freire, a leading writer in the field of education.
Rio’s notorious economic inequalities, countered by strong local social organizations, make it an ideal location to study the relationship between education and social justice.
Rio is home to the samba, along with many theaters, museums, monuments, and beautiful beaches—all of which will allow you to fully immerse yourself in Brazilian culture.
