Earn college credit for your volunteer experience abroad! Seattle Community College offers credit for your international volunteer work and language classes. Academic credit is granted for successful completion of Seattle Community College’s ITL 97 Course as part of international volunteer/internship work, language school attendance, and any additional research activities.
In order to receive credit, applicants must contact Seattle Community College directly to enroll and learn about course requirements. Enrollment in a BridgeVolunteers volunteer program or language course alone does not constitute enrollment of this credit-bearing course. Applicants must also enroll through Seattle Community College, following their requirements and regulations.

International Cooperative Education ITL 97
This course provides students with an opportunity to earn academic credit for work experience or volunteer service in an international setting. It provides for both personal and professional growth and is intended for students who desire to expand their education experiences beyond the traditional classroom setting by working directly within another culture. It engages students in meaningful work experiences, or in responsible and challenging volunteer activity for the common good, while helping them gain understanding, acquire knowledge, and develop the necessary skills for living in a globally interdependent and culturally diverse world. In addition to working or volunteering, students may elect to attend language school (optional) to improve foreign language proficiency. Supplemental assignments offer opportunities for research and reflection of experiences.
Requirements:
Sixty-six hours of volunteer work AND 40 hours of language instruction OR 99 hours of volunteer work.
Terms of Enrollment:
Enrollment in volunteer programs/language courses does not constitute admission to Seattle Community College. Students who are not attempting to earn a degree or certificate through Seattle Community College are registered as non-matriculated students.
Credit:
Students who plan to use this course to fulfill specific curriculum areas or graduation requirements should discuss transfer options and obtain written approval from a counselor or study abroad advisor at their home institution PRIOR to enrollment in this course.
Academic Calendar:
Seattle Central Community College is on the quarter system. Approximate dates are as follows:
Summer: Last week in June through mid-August
Fall: Last week in September through mid-December
Winter: First week in January through March
Spring: First week in April through mid-June
Time Limitations:
Students have two quarters (the quarter you are registered for and one additional quarter) to complete courses and will receive a “Y” (ongoing) on transcripts until all coursework is completed. Please note: The “Y” will remain on transcripts if students do not complete the course.
