“There were many comments from our girls that [ the Ecology and Conservation Program in Costa Rica] was their best Project Term in their 4 years at Sacred Heart. That's quite a compliment since many of them have been to some amazing places. This experience has led some students to explore other careers than they originally had planned. It has led many to action to be wiser consumers. It was simply fantastic and I can't say enough about it."

Why Service Learn in Costa Rica ?
Costa Rica is an ideal location for service learning participants interested in ecology and conservation. A politically stable and environmentally conscious country, Costa Rica is famous for its efforts at preserving its diverse and varied ecosystems. The nation, however, has not been able to avoid environmental damage entirely. As a primarily agricultural country, much of its rainforest has been cleared for cattle ranching and farming, causing severe soil erosion and the loss of vital plant species and wildlife.
Our partner organizations in Costa Rica seek to curb the destruction of native wildlife and preserve one of the most bio-diverse ecosystems in the world. They've established an educational and research facility in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, which works to conserve this fascinating cloud forest and educate locals and foreigners about its importance. Through volunteer service work with these local organizations, service learning participants will get an up-close view of conservation in action while making a difference in Costa Rica’s wilderness.
Three Good Reasons to Study in Monteverde:
Costa Rica's biodiversity makes it one of the most fascinating locations on earth to be involved in conservation—about four percent of the world’s known plant species can be found in this tiny nation!
Characterized by social and political stability, high educational levels, modern services, and a dedication to protect the environment, Costa Rica’s society is as impressive as its scenery.
Costa Rica's proximity to the United States makes it an ideal location for a short trip abroad.
