Wildlife Rehabilitation Program El Petén, Guatemala
Program Overview
Our Wildlife Rehabilitation Program in Guatemala is intended for biology, ecology, conservation, and veterinary students. The program is designed to provide students with hands-on experience in animal rehabilitation and conservation programs with local non-governmental organizations. Students will have the opportunity to apply practical experience to theories and techniques presented in academic coursework at their home institution.
The volunteer service portion of the program allows students to interact with animals to learn about their behavior, research
their diets, and monitor their health. Participants will also be able to learn from local experts and teach local residents about the biodiversity of the region. Students will work closely with resident staff to understand more about wildlife rehabilitation center management and the local environment. Additionally, program participants will help maintain animal enclosures and participate in activities that ensure successful re-entry of the animals into the wild.
Program Highlights:
Learn about animal-care management and conservation issues in the one of the most biodiverse regions in the world

Why Service Learn in Petén?
Comprising one-third of Guatemala’s territory, the Petén region boasts some of the last untouched rainforest in Central America. It is also home to the ruins at Tikal—the most important Mayan archaeological site in the world. Unfortunately, despite limited governmental protection of the natural environment, the Petén still suffers from a large amount of habitat destruction.
Also an issue in the Petén region is animal smuggling. Illegal poachers take wild animals from their natural environment to sell them as pets. As a result, some of Guatemala’s most precious natural treasures are at risk. As a participant with our Wildlife Rehabilitation Program, your help will enable the restoration of wild animals to their natural habitat, as well as increase awareness of rainforest wildlife in the Petén region of Guatemala.
Our Partners
Our partner organization in Guatemala recognizes the need to protect the country's natural assets. They strive for the conservation, preservation, protection, and understanding of the indigenous wildlife in the Petén. One of their most important contributions has been the establishment of a Rescue Center for animals who have been orphaned, abused, or rescued from illegal smugglers who have tried to sell them as pets. Our partners have dedicated themselves to improving social and ecological conditions for future generations. These goals are achieved with the dedicated help of their staff and volunteers.
Three Good Reasons to Study in Guatemala:
Guatemala’s unique geography provides it with unparalleled biodiversity.
Home to the Mayans, the largest surviving indigenous population in the western hemisphere, Guatemala boasts both spectacular ancient ruins and a thriving modern-day culture.
Guatemala’s proximity to the United States makes it ideal for shorter programs.
