  Education & Development Program
Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh, India

Program Overview

Our Education and Development Program in India is intended for students interested in education, social justice, sustainable development, public policy, and advocacy, who are looking to gain extensive insight into the social realities of this complex nation. The program provides participants with the opportunity to learn more about contemporary issues in education and development facing India. Students attend thematic seminars which expose them to a variety of aspects of Indian culture, as well as participate in excursions that provide a deeper understanding of the nation and its people. This program begins in Delhi and moves to Rajasthan or Himachal Pradesh provinces depending on the time of year.

The volunteer service portion of the program allows students to work with local social institutions and organizations, giving them deeper insight into all aspects of Indian society. Participants volunteering in India will help at local anganwadis (day-care centers) working with the children in educational programs and assisting local staff with their administrative duties. Volunteers will also be involved in community maintenance and urban beautification efforts. In addition, students can participate in educational campaigns which highlight health issues such as nutrition, breastfeeding, and HIV prevention.

Why Service Learn in India?
With one of the fastest growing populations and economies in the world, India has become an important player on the global scene. In order to help channel this growth for the benefit of the nation’s citizens, an array of fledgling social organizations have begun extensive work in development. Decisions made during this period may have an impact on the path of growth throughout the third world, making India an especially exciting location for students to study development and education in the developing world today.

Although modernizing quickly, India is clearly not without its share of problems. Its growing population has already topped the 1 billion mark and the country has one of the highest poverty rates in the world. Because of both national debt and the strict class division of the caste system, most of India's poor receive little or no education, health care, or social services. More than half of the country's impoverished citizens live in non-urban areas, where the lack of education and health care is rampant, especially among women and children. Service learning participants can work with our partner organizations in the rural nothern states of Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh to help India’s underprivileged citizens while experiencing development work in action

The country boasts some of the planet’s most spectacular sights, including the famed Taj Mahal.
