  Education and Social Issues Program
Tapalpa, Mexico

Program Overview

Our Education and Social Issues Program in Mexico is intended for education, communications, ESL (English as a Second Language) teaching, Latin American studies, and Spanish majors. The program is designed to provide participants with hands-on experience teaching Spanish-speaking students in the classroom, working with community organizations, and designing workshops for local residents. The program provides participants with the opportunity to apply practical experience to the theories presented in rigorous academic work.

The volunteer service portion of the program allows students to spend their time in public schools, at community art workshops, or at our partner organization’s education center. At the public primary and secondary schools, volunteers will teach primarily English and computer skills. If a participant has a high level of Spanish language skills, he/she may also teach subjects like science and math.

At the art workshops, service learning participants will teach children, teenagers, and adults how to paint, draw, and create paper maché artwork from recycled materials. These workshops will help disadvantaged locals experience personal satisfaction while learning how to generate income by selling their art. Volunteers will also conduct parenting meetings to empower mothers and educate them on how to foster change at home. At the education center, volunteers will teach more artistically focused classes such as dance, drama, art, and music.

Why Service Learn in Mexico?
With a rich culture and vibrant populace, Mexico provides a perfect backdrop for service learning. The current atmosphere surrounding socio-economic disparity and community change makes the country an ideal location for participants interested in social issues, Latin American studies, education, and grassroots development. The charming town of Tapalpa in the state of Jalisco, with its high levels of emigration and resulting social issues, makes a particularly interesting case-study in Mexico’s modern challenges.

Our partner organization in Jalisco works with public school children with a variety of disadvantages—from emotional, physical, or learning disabilities to those who are having problems because of home conditions. These students then participate in free classes that develop creativity while incorporating quality education. Service learning participants will work with this innovative curriculum to give local students the tools necessary to seek new opportunities while supporting positive social transformation.

Because Mexico is the USA’s largest source of immigration, cross-cultural communication and understanding between the two countries is increasingly important.
