Public Health and HIV/AIDSOutreach Program Livingstone, Zambia
Program Overview
Our Public Health and HIV/AIDS Outreach Program in Zambia is intended for public health, nursing, pre-med, and community development students who are interested in learning more about the realities of international public health and development issues. The program is designed to provide students with hands-on experience in health clinics, home-based care, and community-run health outreach programs. Program participants in Zambia will have the opportunity to apply practical experience to the theories presented in rigorous academic work.
The volunteer service portion of the Public Health and HIV/AIDS Outreach Program allows students to work with local clinics, outreach centers, and orphanages in order to gain deeper insight into the issues surrounding HIV/AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa. They will also get a rare first-hand glimpse of how these problems have affected the citizens of Zambia. In this unique humanitarian project based in the city of Livingstone, program participants will assist the medical staff at several local clinics and work at a home for children orphaned by the AIDS epidemic. Volunteers can also participate in other community projects, such as hospice care and classroom construction.
Program Highlights:
Attend academic seminars on public health, issues in HIV/AIDS, and community development.
Explore the area in specialized excursions, with a cruise on the Zambezi River and a trip to Victoria Falls—one of the seven natural wonders of the world.
Learn more about Zambian culture by attending a traditional Zambian meal and participating in other cultural experiences.
This program can be created for one to four week itineraries.
Why Service Learn in Livingstone?
Given its proximity to the popular Victoria Falls and several international borders, Livingstone suffers from the highest rate of HIV/AIDS infection in all of Zambia. The influx of people and corresponding surge in prostitution has further endangered an already vulnerable population. Although the growing tourist industry is bringing in much-needed funding to the area, many Livingstone residents continue to lack access to basic education and medical care. Compounding these problems is the steady increase of children orphaned by the AIDS epidemic, which has placed an additional burden on under-funded social resources. For many, the struggle to find food and shelter is the main objective of their everyday lives.
Our Partners
Our partner organization is dedicated to assisting the people of Livingstone and the surrounding area. They place volunteers in local clinics to help the overworked medical staff, or send them with home-based care workers to remote villages where people do not have access to medical care. Volunteers and service learning participants can also assist teachers in local schools, coach sports, and help build classrooms so students have more places to learn. Through their efforts in Zambia, our volunteers and service learning participants provide a valuable presence for local residents and have an opportunity to make an impact on Zambian lives.
