Help educate impoverished communities and prevent the spread of HIV when you volunteer with our AIDS Prevention Project in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Rio de Janeiro has been hit hard by the world AIDS epidemic. In fact, Brazil is the epicenter of the disease in South America: the country accounts for nearly 60 percent of all HIV/AIDS cases in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Our AIDS Prevention Project was designed to increase education and provide information about AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases to economically depressed areas of the city. These neighborhoods tend to suffer from a lack of knowledge concerning heath and disease, and our project works to bridge this information gap.
Volunteers work in “favelas” (shantytowns) throughout Rio. You will visit schools, community centers, recreational areas, and libraries. As a volunteer in Rio, you will be in direct contact with both male and female residents of the favelas—leading educational classes and lectures, creating and distributing informative posters, and handing out condoms and other contraceptives.
In addition, volunteers may be involved in activities that deal with healthy nutrition and the prevention of diseases like tuberculosis, dengue, and yellow fever. You can also help educate pregnant teenagers about breastfeeding, proper child care, and nutrition. Your work as a volunteer in Rio will help promote the long-term health of these disadvantaged community members.
As a volunteer you can:
Promote educational health campaigns.
Present lectures about sexual education.
Inform people about family planning.
Give orientations about pregnancy, health, and disease.
Educate pregnant teenagers through talks, games, and crafts.
Distribute contraceptives.
Our Partners
Our partner organization in Rio de Janeiro is a nonprofit, civil association that aims to fight against social exclusion. Their goal is to build a fair and equal society through volunteer projects dealing with ecology, education, health, art, and culture. The organization seeks to make a positive impact with the help of volunteers looking for the satisfaction of sharing, learning, and helping create a fairer world for all.
On this project, our partner works with various groups and centers in Rio to educate the local people about HIV and AIDS. They offer assistance and education to teenagers who are pregnant, and speak to children at schools and community centers about the importance of contraceptives as well as proper health and nutrition.
