Brighten the lives of at-risk youth when you volunteer with our Youth Shelter Project in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
In the “favelas” (shantytowns) of Rio, many families lack the resources to feed, clothe, and educate their children. Youths who live in these urban slums are surrounded by violence and drug trafficking. Many come from broken homes, lack basic services, or drop out of school at a young age. Others leave home due to domestic violence or have been abandoned entirely.
With nowhere to turn, these children and teenagers seek refuge at a local youth shelter created for those at high social risk. The unique home is dedicated to helping young people learn social responsibility and develop physically, emotionally, and creatively. The shelter provides a safe environment where children aged six to 14 can study, eat three meals a day, and participate in a variety of educational and recreational activities.
As a volunteer with the Youth Shelter Project in Rio, you will be in direct contact with these at-risk youths. Volunteers can contribute to the children’s well-being by leading activities such as dance, music, sports, and English classes. In addition, you will also have the opportunity to act as a mentor, tutor, friend, and role model. Your efforts and dedication on this project will help provide the youth with life-coping skills, as well as the tools to become contributing members of society.
As a volunteer you can:
Conduct dance, art, and music workshops.
Plan and coordinate sports activities.
Help at-risk students with their schoolwork.
Teach English classes.
Act as a mentor and role model for needy children.
Assist with the shelter’s daily tasks.
Our Partners
Our partner organization in Rio de Janeiro is a nonprofit, civil association that aims to fight against social exclusion. Their goal is to build a fair and equal society through volunteer projects dealing with ecology, education, health, art, and culture. The organization seeks to make a positive impact with the help of volunteers looking for the satisfaction of sharing, learning, and helping a create fairer world for all.
The youth shelter that forms the basis for this project was established nearly 25 years ago. The shelter staff aims to teach young people life skills while creating a familial environment filled with love, education, and respect. They provide the basic necessities and teach the principles that build the foundation for caring individuals. The objective of the shelter is for these children to move back in with their families, but some are never able to return and the shelter becomes their home.
