“[My favorite part of volunteering was] gaining a new understanding of different cultures other than my own, meeting people from all over the world and making lasting friendships.”
Rebecca Mejia
“[I enjoyed] learning about the culture and why there was a need for volunteer work. I would have liked to stay longer.”
Rescue and rehabilitate wild animals when you volunteer with our Rainforest Wildlife Project in Guatemala.
As a volunteer with the Rainforest Wildlife Project, you will be working at a Wildlife Rescue Center in the Petén region of northern Guatemala. Run by our local partner organization, the Rescue Center is home to a variety of exotic wildlife, including parrots, macaws, spider and howler monkeys, margays, ocelots, coatimundis, tayras, and kinkajous. Volunteers in the Petén will help take care of the animals living at the Wildlife Rescue Center.
Nearly all of the animals at the center have been seized from illegal smugglers who tried to sell them as pets. Some have been orphaned or abused. Most of the animals are young and motherless and would not survive without the protection offered by the center. In addition to caring for the animals on a daily basis, volunteers will have the occasional opportunity to help release rehabilitated animals into the wild. Volunteers will also assist in the maintenance of the Rescue Center, which is used as an educational site for visitors and school groups.
As a volunteer with our Rainforest Wildlife Project, your help will enable the restoration of wild animals to their natural habitat, as well as increase awareness of rainforest wildlife in the Petén region of Guatemala.
As a volunteer you can:
Feed and care for animals at the
Rescue Center.
Research the diets and habits of wild
animals.
Maintain animal enclosures at the
Rescue Center.
Construct extra enclosures, cages,
and buildings.
Give environmental tours of the Wildlife Center.
Our Partners
Our partner organization in Guatemala recognizes the need to protect the country's natural assets. They strive for the conservation, preservation, protection, and understanding of the indigenous wildlife in the Petén. One of their most important contributions has been the establishment of a Rescue Center for animals who have been orphaned, abused, or rescued from illegal smugglers who have tried to sell them as pets. Our partners have dedicated themselves to improving social and ecological conditions for future generations. These goals are achieved with the dedicated help of their staff and volunteers.
