Help conserve a vital portion of Peru's ecosystem when you volunteer with our Andean Conservation Project.
One of the most biologically diverse nations on the planet, Peru boasts a wide variety of ecosystems—from the world’s driest desert to the second-highest mountain range on earth to the lush Amazon jungle. It is also home to a nearly unparalleled collection of plant, animal, and insect species, including a staggering 20 percent of the Earth’s total bird species.
But such natural riches are difficult to maintain. Deforestation and other habitat destruction runs rampant and much of Peru’s native wildlife is endangered. Our project in Peru works with several organizations to help conserve the country’s profound natural treasures. Volunteers in Peru can choose from three conservation projects. Though each project differs in focus, they all represent a rare opportunity to conserve Peru’s fragile environment.
Animal Care—On this project, volunteers will work at the Cusco Zoo, part of the local university which directs the maintenance and conservation of native Peruvian animal species. You will cooperate with college students and professors to care for the animals and help with their cleaning and feeding.
Reforestation—Reforestation projects take place in the Amazon jungle, on the coast, and in the Andes Mountains. These efforts help rural communities and small villages reforest areas that have lost native flora or fauna. With the help of Peruvian environmentalists, volunteers will work with local inhabitants to recover native species of trees, plants, and animals.
Farming—You will work alongside villagers in the small mountain community of Salla Falla during their annual harvest and planting seasons (depending on the time of year). Aside from the harvesting and planting, volunteers will help transport and store crops and/or seed stocks. These seed stocks, which are central to the survival of the indigenous people and their traditional crops, are being depleted because of neglect and lack of resources.
As a volunteer you can:
Help reforest land surrounding rural villages and towns.
Care for animals at the Cusco Zoo.
Maintain essential zoo facilities.
Participate in the potato harvest with indigenous Andean villagers.
Assist biologists in the jungle removing bamboo, planting orchids, and developing an inventory of different animal species.
Our Partners
Our partner organization in Peru provides a safe and supervised environment for volunteers to learn about Peru while working to conserve its rich natural and cultural treasures. The organization works in partnership with local NGOs, governmental departments, hospitals and clinics, and other institutions to promote development initiatives that benefit Peru’s children and its natural environment.
