  Youth Outreach Project
Cusco, Peru

Help some of the world's most desperate children when you volunteer with our Youth Outreach Project in Peru.

Peru is one of the largest countries in South America. It’s also one of the poorest, with more than 50 percent of the population living in poverty. The situation is perhaps saddest for Peru’s children, some 20,000 of whom die per year before they reach their first birthday. Another 25 percent suffer from chronic malnutrition. More than a quarter will never receive an education and thus will likely remain in poverty for the rest of their lives.

As a volunteer with our Youth Outreach Project in Cusco, you can choose from several outreach projects dedicated to helping Peru’s most vulnerable and disadvantaged citizens.

Orphanages—Volunteers will help local orphans, ranging in age from five to 16 years, with their homework, assignments, and activities. You may also work with other volunteers, teachers, and/or assistants. Most orphanages receive either girls or boys, although a few house both girls and boys. All of the children need your care, attention, and companionship.

Day Care Centers—You will be volunteering at a day care center that provides housing, food, and attention for the children of working single mothers. The young children—from infants to five-year-olds—need quality day care while their mothers are at work.

Disabled Clinic—This clinic offers free treatment to mentally and physically disabled children. Currently housing 50 to 60 children, the clinic employs teachers, nurses, and physical therapists. All volunteers will help out feeding, bathing, and playing with the children. You may also work as a teaching assistant in the school or participate in other tasks depending on your skills and interests.

Street Kids—You will be working with a group of abandoned street children. These children have been separated from their families and live in a police-run home. As a volunteer, you will care for the kids, providing organized activities and mentorship. These at-risk children love company and enjoy having volunteers visit with them.
