Public Health and HIV Outreach Project Livingstone, Zambia
Immerse yourself in the African health system and spend time with children in need when you volunteer with our Public Health and HIV Outreach Project in Zambia.
In this unique humanitarian project in Livingstone, Zambia, you will assist the medical staff at several local clinics and work at a home for children orphaned by the AIDS epidemic. Volunteers will also lend a hand with other community projects, such as hospice care and classroom construction.
One of the world’s poorest countries, Zambia runs a public health care system that is sadly under-funded and understaffed. Its clinics are struggling to cope with an HIV epidemic that has now infected over 20% of the population. Meanwhile, large numbers of Zambian doctors and other medical professionals continue to leave the country in search of better opportunities abroad.
As a volunteer with our Public Health and HIV Outreach Project, you can make a difference in the lives of local residents. Your assistance in the clinics of Livingstone will provide much-needed relief to an overwhelmed staff. You will also get a rare glimpse into how Africa’s medical institutions are coping with the HIV epidemic and the spread of other infectious diseases. At the local orphanage, your energy and presence will help the students with their learning and creativity, and make a lasting impression on their lives.
As a volunteer you can:
Provide clinical assistance in such
areas as infant care, baby weighing,
HIV/AIDS support group work, and
educational outreaches to local
schools.
Work at an AIDS orphanage,
enhancing the orphans’ educational
experiences, helping with drama
productions, and coordinating other
extracurricular activities.
Assist with other community
development initiatives including
hospice care as well as building and
refurbishing village facilities.
Our Partners
Our partner organization is dedicated to assisting the people of Livingstone and the surrounding area. They place volunteers in local clinics to help the overworked medical staff, or send them with home-based care workers to remote villages where people do not have access to medical care. Volunteers and service learning participants can also assist teachers in local schools, coach sports, and help build classrooms so students have more places to learn. Through their efforts in Zambia, our volunteers and service learning participants provide a valuable presence for local residents and have an opportunity to make an impact on Zambian lives.
