"I returned to the U.S. on Sunday and am already trying to figure out how I can return to Africa. I LOVED EVERY SECOND OF IT! What an amazing country and incredible people. And the organization is top-notch. My time in Zambia was the best of my life."

  Teaching and HIV Outreach Project
Livingstone, Zambia

Teach and mentor at-risk children when you volunteer with our Teaching and HIV Outreach Project in Zambia.

The majority of public facilities in Livingstone, Zambia are badly under-funded and, as a result, are overcrowded and lack critical resources. The situation is so dire that local schools must operate under a system known as “hot-seating,” conducting two or even three school sessions daily in shifts in order to accommodate all the children. Thus, many students are in school for only two or three hours per day. An active city located at the crossroads of several international borders, Livingstone also suffers from the highest rate of HIV infection in Zambia, further compounding the strain on local resources.

On our Teaching and HIV Outreach Project, you will have the opportunity to volunteer at several local schools, an orphanage, and other community development program sites in Livingstone. At the schools, you will assist teachers in the classroom, coach sports to help keep kids off the streets, and simply be a positive presence in the children’s lives. At the home for orphans of the AIDS epidemic, you will help children with their homework, play games, and provide assistance with theater productions and other extracurricular activities.

While the city of Livingstone has poor facilities, the children are eager to learn and to interact with adult role models. Your energy and presence will help the students develop intellectually and creatively, and will make a lasting impression on their lives.

Our Partners
Our partner organization is dedicated to assisting the people of Livingstone and the surrounding area. They place volunteers in local clinics to help the overworked medical staff, or send them with home-based care workers to remote villages where people do not have access to medical care. Volunteers and service learning participants can also assist teachers in local schools, coach sports, and help build classrooms so students have more places to learn. Through their efforts in Zambia, our volunteers and service learning participants provide a valuable presence for local residents and have an opportunity to make an impact on Zambian lives.
