With warm-hearted residents, pristine landscapes, and numerous opportunities for outdoor adventure, Zambia combines African culture and unforgettable beauty. The land’s natural treasures include countless wetlands, abundant wildlife, picturesque safaris, and the largest waterfalls in the world. Bordering six countries in southern Africa, the nation of 10 million also impresses with its friendly populace. Zambia boasts one of the most stable democracies in Africa, as well as residents proud of a stunning cultural diversity that includes over 70 different tribes.
Program Location: Livingstone
Mosi-oa-tunya: The Smoke that Thunders. This is how the locals refer to the magnificent spray from Victoria Falls. Against this backdrop lies Livingstone, a city of over 100,000 located in southern Zambia just outside the Victoria Falls area. A place with colonial infrastructure and easygoing African charm, Livingstone is known as Zambia’s tourist mecca and the “adventure capital of Africa.”
Despite the tourist boom, Livingstone suffers along with the rest of Zambia from under-funded schools and clinics, and a population decimated by HIV infection. Fortunately, with the help of volunteers around the world, our local partner organization is gradually improving the lives of Livingstone’s people.
Why Volunteer in Zambia?
Like many countries in Africa, Zambia has been crippled by national debt, strained public resources, and an HIV epidemic that has infected more than 20 percent of the adult population. In fact, due in large part to HIV/AIDS, life expectancy at birth in Zambia is a mere 37 years. Because of poor healthcare funding, many Zambian citizens are not getting the medical attention they need. This combination of problems has also left many Zambian children orphaned and has placed an enormous burden on under-funded clinics and schools. With an excess of free time and lack of attention, many children simply wander the streets to pass their days.
Our Partners
Our partner organization is dedicated to assisting the people of Livingstone and the surrounding area. They place volunteers in local clinics to help the overworked medical staff, or send them with home-based care workers to remote villages where people do not have access to medical care. Volunteers and service learning participants can also assist teachers in local schools, coach sports, and help build classrooms so students have more places to learn. Through their efforts in Zambia, our volunteers and service learning participants provide a valuable presence for local residents and have an opportunity to make an impact on Zambian lives.
